A "clafoutis" is a delicious French baked custard. It's surprisingly easy to assemble, and it bakes in the oven to a puffy, bumpy, bubbly, custardy, delightful dish. All you need is a medium sized mixing bowl and a whisk to mix the custard and a tart or pie dish for baking.
Place the butter in the baking dish and warm the butter in the oven as the oven is preheating. Heat the dish just until the butter melts. Take dish out of oven and set aside.
In a large mixing bowl, whisk four eggs. While continuing to mix add the sugar, milk, cream, salt, vanilla extract and all purpose flour. Whisk to combine.
Arrange 2/3 of the sliced figs in the bottom of the baking dish, in the melted butter.
Pour the custard mixture over the butter and the figs.
Arrange the remaining figs on top of the poured custard.
Bake at 350°F for 35-40 minutes. The custard will bake into a bubbly, bumpy treat.
Sprinkle with powdered sugar and serve with lemon wedges/juice, more powdered sugar and mascarpone cheese.
