Eggs Baked with Sweet Potatoes & Tomatoes

I must point out from the beginning that this is a “slow breakfast”. Logically, a “slow morning” is the only kind of morning to cook a “slow breakfast”. I’m sure I don’t need to point this out, but (if you’ve forgotten), a “slow morning” is the kind of morning that gives you time to take in the quiet, and maybe sit outside for a little while. Think. Assess. Just be. I made this for my husband and myself a few weeks ago on just that kind of morning. Because I work in an upstairs studio with kitchen attached, it’s easy […]

Egg and Garden Cress Sandwiches

On outdoor tables and bright kitchen counters all over the UK this time of year, you will find all kinds of smallish, crustless, cut-to-triangle sandwiches. One of my favorites is the “Egg and Cress”, or more accurately, “Egg and Garden Cress”. When we moved to Germany three years ago, I was thrilled to find little punnets of garden cress in the markets. Here in Germany it’s called “kressen” and it’s used in salads, dips, and added to “Frischkäse”. Incidentally, I’ve found that Frischkäse (fresh cheese) is a great vehicle for all kinds of lovely smallish greens, like chives and “Bärlauch” […]

Roasted and Caramelized Flat White Peaches (Plattpfirsich)

I understand it’s easy to classify summer fruits as “for either snacks or pies”. However, there’s another way to enjoy them when you don’t want raw fruit, and you don’t want to go all out and make a pie or cobbler. Roast them. That’s right. Just like roasting vegetables. You can eat roasted fruits as is, or as a topping for yogurt or ice cream. I add just a touch of salt and honey before I roast fruits so they are a little salty, and a lot caramel-y. The German markets are absolutely glistening with jewel-tone fruits this time of […]

Seasoned Breadcrumbs

If you aspire to be a great cook, consider making your own breadcrumbs. Breadcrumbs are the frugal secret of great cooks around the world. They can be used in countless recipes to bind, moisten, enhance and top. Many of the world’s greatest recipes simply would not exist without the humble little breadcrumb. Extra credit? Season your breadcrumbs when you make them for your own preservative-free convenience ingredient. I’ve been using my secret blend of seasonings to enhance my breadcrumbs for years. I use my homemade breadcrumbs in meatloaf, meatballs, stuffed mushrooms, stuffed tomatoes, over pasta dishes, to bread chicken cutlets […]

Apricot and Almond Smoothie

As with all smoothies, ease is paramount. Simply whirr all the ingredients in a blender. Garnishing with fresh mint is purely optional, and I’m not sure it’s something I would have done if I was not taking a photo of this at the end. But you know, maybe we should garnish things just for ourselves. It really is nice to sit in the shade with a smooth, icy drink festooned with a tall sprig of mint.
